Under the dynamic leadership of Mayor Steve Benjamin, the City of Columbia SC is a fantastic city of the new south. They asked themselves, “How do we through every action we take, become the most talented, educated and entrepreneurial city in America?” When it came to deploying AMI for their water system, the City of Columbia chose Badger Meter’s ORION Cellular technology. This easy to deploy infrastructure-free smart water network provides Network as a Service and utilizes the existing AT&T cellular network to provide decision making data for the city as well as its customers.
The future-proof smart water metering system helps the utility to better support its 150,000 metered accounts, including 400,000 residents spread across 320 square miles. It leverages existing cellular infrastructure so the utility can focus on providing excellent water and customer service without having to manage its infrastructure. This new system allows the city to:
- Send accurate water bills and eliminate data entry errors that come with manual meter reading
- Provide customers with access to the EyeOnWater® consumer engagement tool, where customers can view water use and set water controls and early leak detection to catch issues before they result in high bills
- Continue operating with core values of accountability and transparency, while protecting one of the world’s most precious resources
City leaders in Columbia are excited for the future knowing that their new water system will be interoperable with smart city initiatives they may implement down the road.
